Traditional calipers and dividers predate design in direct measurement. As direct measurement increased in popularity, these tools became useful in trasferring precise dimensions from the workpiece to the measuring instrument or to gage similar parts.

Vernier calipers are unique in that they feature a main scale on the beam and a sliding vernier scale on the movable jaw to deliver precise measurements of outside dimensions, inside dimensions, and depths.

Digital calipers are precision measuring devices used to measure linear dimensions, thickness, and diameter. These devices have upper and lower parallel jaws that perform measurement with extreme accuracy and the output appears on an electronic LCD display.
