Test Indicators

Dial indicators and digimatic indicators are devices for testing concentric precision, level, squareness, or angles to ensure that measurements are within allowable tolerances. Mounted on a magnetic based stand, one or more rod arms connected with swivel joints are positioned in order to press the contact point of the test indicator lightly to the workpiece on a lathe or mill.

To test for concentric precision, the lathe is turned on to spin the workpiece. If the part is out of round, the needle on a dial indicator will move, while the LED display on a digimatic indicator changes. The lathe operator then adjusts the lathe and retests until the indicator reading holds steady when the part spins; this ensures that the workpiece is properly centered and won't be out of round when completed. Quite versatile, test indicators can also be used during milling to ensure that your parallels are level during setup and that angles for your workpiece are true and within precision tolerances.
